The Rule of Conversational Pace
For novice runners, the single biggest error is running too fast. In this program, "Running" is defined as any rhythmic bounce that gets you from foot to foot. It should not be a sprint.
You must maintain a conversational pace—meaning you can comfortably recite full sentences or carry out a complete conversation without gasping for breath. If you are struggling for air, slow down immediately! Your respiratory system and muscular endurance will grow dramatically over the coming weeks through consistent, slow aerobic work.
Novice Guidance Pillars
What is Cross-Training (CT)?
Cross-training is any physical activity that isn't running but builds cardiovascular fitness without the impact forces. We highly recommend low-impact activities like swimming, stationary cycling, rowing, elliptical trainers, or yoga. Keep effort moderate!
How do I manage muscle soreness?
Mild dull muscle aches are normal as your body builds new tissue. However, sharp, pinpoint joint pain, swelling, or pain that worsens as you run are red flags. If you experience these, take an extra rest day, ice the area, and do not rush back.
What if I miss a run?
Don't sweat it! Life happens. If you miss a single run, just pick up where you left off. If you miss an entire week or more due to sickness or schedule conflicts, repeat the prior completed week to ensure your body is fully ready for the next progression.
